inside. They moved straight through a reception room to a back room

lined with cages of cats and smelling like animal piss and alcohol.

“Well, what have we got here,” a cheery voice called out.

“An orange tom. Wild son of a bitch.”

“Bring him here, Sam. Let’s have a look.”

Tom’s crate was roughly dumped on a table and a pleasant-

looking older woman with short gray hair peered in at him. “Well

aren’t you a big boy?”

Tom hissed at her, and she pulled her head back. “Oh my. Why

don’t you weigh him and get him into a cage. He’ll be okay there until

tomorrow when the vet comes in.”

Sam didn’t look too happy, but he reached out for the latch on the

crate. Tom let out a bloodcurdling yowl, and Sam pulled his hand

back. “The weigh-in can wait for the vet tomorrow. Come on, you.”

Sam picked up the crate and walked toward one of the cages lining

the wall.

The new cage wasn’t much bigger than the crate. Tom carried on

like a rabid animal in a horror movie as Sam somehow stuffed him in

the cage and slammed the door shut in his face.

Hackles up and claws extended, Tom put on a good show. He

hissed and meowed, but it didn’t mean a damn thing. He was well and

truly fucked.

What are they going to do to me?

As if she’d heard him, the woman said something to Sam about

tests for feline leukemia and FIV and a procedure to neuter the tom

cat.

Neuter!

The word struck terror in Tom’s heart, and he curled into the back

of his cage, making himself as small as possible. If he escaped

without losing his nuts, he’d never shift again.

“I’ll see ya tomorrow. Maggie.”

“Night, Sam.”

Shit, this is going to be a long night.
